Virginia Truffles is a family-owned and operated truffle farm rooted in the heart of Rixeyville, Virginia. Established in 2007 by the Martin family, our farm is not only where we work—it’s where we live. John and Pat Martin began Virginia Truffles as a small nursery, inoculating seedlings with Tuber melanosporum. Since then, it has blossomed into a thriving operation. Our first acre of trees was planted soon after, and in 2018, we uncovered our very first truffle. Each year, our production continues to grow as we strive to stay at the forefront of truffle science and cultivation techniques in the United States. Virginia Truffles is now guided by its second generation, with Vanessa Shea, in partnership with John and Pat, leading the farm following the passing of her sister and long-time partner, Olivia Taylor. Olivia, daughter of Pat and John Martin, was an integral part of Virginia Truffles and played a pivotal role in its success. Olivia brought more than 12 years of experience and passion to truffle growing, research, and international truffle harvest training. She was not only a beloved farm manager and dog handler but also the face of Virginia Truffles for many years. Her legacy continues to inspire the farm’s ongoing mission. Vanessa Shea oversees all farm and business operations. She also is Virginia Truffles’ primary truffle hunter and dog handler. Her husband, Adam Shea, a formally trained chef who joined the team in 2022, contributes as the culinary advisor, enriching our truffle offerings and assisting with farm maintenance. Since 2020, we have offered agritourism through guided truffle hunts during the Black Perigord truffle harvest season from December to February. These hunts have become a cherished local attraction, allowing us to share our work and passion with the broader community. Our on-site microbiology lab has long been central to our dedication to scientific rigor. We are now expanding our research capabilities and extending new services to fellow growers. Brandi Martin, Vanessa’s younger sister, has joined as Chief Scientist, and Joseph Porco works alongside her in managing the lab. Together, they lead our newly launched Truffle Species Confirmation service, using PCR and gel electrophoresis to provide a cost-effective and accurate means of verifying truffle species. This advancement solidifies Virginia Truffles’ commitment to staying at the forefront of truffle science and helping growers nationwide. Together, we are committed to preserving the vision that Olivia helped build, ensuring Virginia Truffles continues to thrive. Virginia Truffles remains steadfast in its mission: to cultivate high-quality truffles, educate the public on truffle farming, and carry forward Olivia’s vision for the future.
