Steve and Rachel love to cook and having lived in the Atlanta and Nashville areas, they were frequent visitors to some of the best-known farmers markets in the southeast. Sourcing local ingredients including pasture raised meats became an obsession to them. An obsession that grew into a desire to produce their own delicious and healthy meats. They spent the next two years visiting dozens of farms, attending workshops and seminars, and reading everything they could about small-scale farming and regenerative agriculture. They saved every penny they could while searching for suitable land to start their farm. On a hot July Sunday, they looked at a 24 acre parcel that they had driven past many times but this time they walked the property and found an oasis of grass, trees, and hills. They knew this was it and in August 2017, Hidden Hills Farm was founded on land that had been continuously farmed since 1888. The original farmers are buried on the property and Steve and Rachel live in the same house these farmers built in 1890 out of hand cut cedars. The driving concept behind Hidden Hills Farm is that “you are what you eat, eats and how it lives”. They strive to create a clean, natural environment for their poultry and livestock. By consistent rotation of coops, chicken tractors, and pens their animals not only get a clean environment but have access to fresh pastures full of healthy grasses, bugs, grubs, and more. Our pigs have access to the woods where they root for acorns, pecans, and a variety of things found in the soil. These regenerative practices are key to reversing climate change by rebuilding soil, providing clean and safe water runoff, and reversing carbon emissions. Their focus also remains on producing delicious meat and eggs in the most humane way that they can. One visit to the farm will reveal the care that they provide – they feel that all animals should be treated with respect especially the ones that are produced for food. Steve and Rachel are living their dream of working side-by-side in the outdoors raising heritage breeds and doing their part to restore environmental health. Rachel is a graduate of Clemson University. Steve attended Anderson College and is a veteran with 17 years of service. They both have a background in business. They live with their three dogs and enjoy sports, exploring the outdoors, and, of course, cooking.
