In 1825 Joseph G. Bacon moved from Middletown Connecticut to what is now known as Bacon Farms in Hillsborough, NC. At that time the land was home to an Inn and a place where travelers could pasture their cattle for the night before reaching the market. Various crops were produced on the land and beef cattle were raised there. In 1881 the farm was passed down to son James Webb Bacon who then passed the land to John Walter Bacon in 1913. John had many crops and animals including sweet potatoes, tobacco, hay, Angus beef cows and Guernsey milk cows. His children, Wallace and Ellen Bacon, continued to farm the land under the name Bacon Farms. This was the first time a name was given to the farm. Wallace followed in his father's footsteps as a successful farmer raising chicken eggs, Angus and Hereford beef cows and various crops including sweet corn and hay. His 3 daughters, Ellen, Jeanne and Anne were often found sorting and packing eggs and caring for the animals. In 1987, when Wallace passed away, Jeanne's husband Donald Johnson continued farming operations. He took over the herd of 40 beef cows and initiated the cultivation of strawberries and chyranthemums on the farm. Donald Johnson passed away in 2007 and his wife Jeanne Johnson passed just 4 years later in 2011 passing the farm to their children Laura and Ben Johnson. Both Ben and Laura are interested in keeping the farm in the family and as an operational farm. They are starting this adventure by growing chrysanthemums and pumpkins and plan to incorporate grass fed livestock back into the farm in the coming years.
